Ghana Records First Coronavirus Death, Shuts Borders
The West African nation of Ghana has recorded its first coronavirus death, since the deadly disease was first confirmed there.
The victim was a 61-year-old Lebanese male, a trader, who was a resident in Kumasi. He was said to be ill and had reported to a health facility with cough and fever (temp 39.4 degrees Celcius).
A sample taken from him tested positive for Coronavirus, according to reports by GhanaWeb.
His was the 11th confirmed COVID-19 case in Ghana, and was reported on Thursday, March 19th, 2020.
Deputy Health Minister Alex Abban, who confirmed the death, said,
The information I got from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service is that that person (the Lebanese man) has died. He died today (Saturday).
Meanwhile, the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo ordered the closure of all the nation’s borders to human traffic, in a televised address on Saturday, March 21st, 2020.
All our borders, that is, by land, sea and air, will be closed to human traffic for the next two weeks beginning midnight on Sunday,
he said.
