Kenya’s Former President, Daniel Arap Moi Dies Aged 95
Former Kenya’s President, Daniel arap Moi has died at the age of 95. Moi, who ruled Kenya until he stepped down in 2002, after being constitutionally barred from running for another term in the office. He died in the early hours of February 4, 2020 at the Nairobi Hospital.
Critics saw him as an authoritarian dictator who held on to power for twenty four (24) years, while his allies credited him for maintaining stability in Kenya.
President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed Moi’s death by saying said:
It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, H.E. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, the Second President of the Republic of Kenya.
His Excellency the Former President passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this 4th February, 2020, in the presence of his family.
Moi, who was a former school teacher, was a close ally of Jomo Kenyatta in the run-up to Kenyan independence in 1963. He served as the East African country’s Home Affairs Minister from 1964 to 1967. And he became Kenya’s Vice-President from 1967 to 1978, and subsequently succeeded President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta after the latter’s death.
