Nigeria Gov. Orders Release Of Detained Activist, Omoyele Sowore
Nigeria’s Attorney General said in a statement Tuesday that the detained activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore would be released on bail.
Sowore, the founder and publisher of Sahara reporters news website, was arrested in August after an attempt to organize a nationwide demonstration against Nigeria’s incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari. He was charged with treason, money laundering and cyberstalking the President. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Earlier this month in an exclusive interview granted to CNN, Sowore’s mother, Esther Sowore desperately appealed to President Buhari to release her son.
Nigeria’s Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, said in a statement that the decision has been made to release Sowore, in compliance with the bail granted to him.
My office has chosen to comply with the court orders while considering the pursuit of its rights of appeal and/or review of the order relating to the bail as granted or varied by the courts,
Malami said in the statement.
On Tuesday, Sowore’s wife, Opeyemi Sowore made a statement to CNN that she was grateful that her husband is about to be released, but insists that all charges against him should be dropped. She called the charges “baseless.”
While I am grateful for reports on Yele’s long-overdue release on bail, my number one concern is for his safety. We remain resolute on Yele being cleared of all baseless charges. I look forward to his safe return home to our family in NJ. We continue to pray for a holiday miracle,
she said.
