Attempted Jailbreak At Kaduna Prison Over COVID-19
There was an unsuccessful jailbreak by some inmates at the Kaduna Correctional Centre on Tuesday, March 32st, 2020, due to fears of contracting coronavirus in their congested jail.
We gathered that there was unrest among the prisoners, following rumours in the facility situated along the Independence Way in Kaduna metropolis over the possibility of spread spreading coronavirus in the facility.
Our sources said the prisoners became afraid that they might contract the deadly virus as a result of the congestion they currently experience in the correctional facility.
A resident close to the prison told Flavision that he heard gunshots from the correctional facility.
Another source said some of the inmates unsuccessfully tried to escape to avoid contracting the disease.
One of the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that,
We learnt the prison inmates are protesting. There is actually unrest there. They are protesting that they can be infected with the coronavirus.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna Correctional Centre, Mr. Nathaniel Gagas, confirmed the incident.
There is normalcy now. Security has beefed up in and outside the facility. There is no cause for alarm,
another source said.
Flavision also learnt that the prison authorities sought reinforcement from the Police, Army, as well as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to bring order in the facility.
