Teacher Charged With Breaking Arm Of 10-year-old Student
On Wednesday, a46-year-old teacher, Ikenna Ekwenam, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking a 10-year-old student’s arm while flogging him for late arrival for a make-up test.
Charges against the teacher, who resides in Mushin, Lagos State, include assault.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant committed the crime on November 22th, 2019 at CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos.
The prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, informed the court that Ekwenam unlawfully assaulted the victim by flogging him with a cane, which severely injured him.
The defendant, an agriculture science teacher, beat the Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) boy for failing to be punctual for a make-up test.
When his mother came to pick him, she discovered that her son had been physical abused and severally injured.
The mother took him to a hospital for treatment, where medical reports revealed that the boy had dislocation on his left elbow bone,
Ayorinde said.
The prosecutor told the court that the boy’s parents reported the case to the police who subsequently arrested the defendant.
The prosecutor said the offense contravened Section 173 of the 2015 Criminal Law of Lagos State.
According to the The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that section prescribes three-year jail term for assault.
Following the accused man’s not guilty plea, he was released on bail by the magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, of one hundred thousand Naira (N100, 000.00) with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate gave conditions of bail: that the sureties should have gainful employment and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government for two years.
The case was adjourned till March 2nd, 2020.
