2 Men Arraigned For Allegedly Beating Up Police ASP

Two men were arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Ikorodu, Lagos on Friday, March 6th, 2020 for allegedly beating up a police officer while performing his lawful duty.

The accused, Ukuagbu Kenelta, 31, and Chukwubuiko Ukewgbu 25, were charged with four counts of conspiracy, assault, felony to with malicious damage and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

The counsel to the prosecution, Sgt. Mary Ajiteru, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on February 25th, 2020, at about 5:00 pm in Ipakodo Police Station, Sekunmade Road, Ebute axis of Ikorodu.

Ajiteru alleged that the defendants brutalised police ASP, Ameachi George, attached to the Ipakodo Police Station.

She said the defendants unlawfully and willfully destroyed a plastic table worth N3,000.00, property belonging to the Nigeria Police Force Ipakodo division.

The prosecutor added that the defendants also behaved in a way likely to cause breach of peace by violent shouting, causing fear in people.

Ajiteru said that such offence contravened the provisions of sections 411, 174, 531 and 168, (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate O.M. Dawodu granted the defendants bail in the sum of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000.00) each with two sureties each in like sum.

The magistrate adjourned the case until March 19th, 2020 for mention.
