Abuja Doctors Commence Strike As FG Announces New Coronavirus Case
The Abuja Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors on Tuesday, March 17th, 2020 began an indefinite strike in the midst of the Federal Government’s announcement of a new Coronavirus case in Lagos.
According to a statement signed by the president of the union, Roland Aigbovo, the medical doctors said they took the decision deliberating on the Coronavirus threat, care of patients and working conditions in hospitals.
The striking doctors, who stated that the decision was a difficult one to make, said the FCT administration’s failure to pay their basic salaries for over two months contributed in part to their decision.
The ARD president stated that the association had earlier issued ultimatums and warnings, to alert relevant authorities regarding the non-payment of their salaries, adding that the authorities ignored the warnings.
According to him, there had been irregularities in salary payment and shortfalls, since the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System was introduced by the Federal Captial Territory Authority.
