Coronavirus: We Have No Power To Punish UITH Professor – NCDC
The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that it will not punish Prof. Alakija Salami, a senior consultant in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for alleged unethical conducts.
Dr. Alihu Adebara, NCDC Team Teader to Kwara, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Thursday, April 9th, 2020, said that the NCDC had left any punitive measures to the Kwara State Government to handle.
According to NAN, Salami was accused of allegedly hiding the travel history, the management and eventual release of the corpse of a suspected coronavirus patient who died in the teaching hospital.
However, the Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, had already ordered that Salami, an expert in infectious diseases, be suspended.
Adebara said the NCDC had made an assessment of the situation and level of preparedness in the state to fight COVID-19 pandemic and concluded that the state government had put in place the necessary facilities.
Basically, the NCDC has confirmed two cases of COVID-19 in the state and so many contact tracing of over 200 has commenced.
We will offer the necessary support to compliment the state government’s efforts,
he said.
The NCDC Team Lead warned that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is real, and urged those who had travelled to high risks countries to self-isolate themselves for fourteen (14) days.
He advised the general public to adhere to the social distancing directives of the state government, adding that hand washing and hygiene should be practised religiously.
