Group Leader Who Allegedly Caned Ebonyi Pastor Reports Self To Police
The leader of the Isi Oru Age Grade, Mr. Amadi Julius Nyerere, arrested on Thursday, May 14, 2020, and seen in a trending video as having been abducted, turned himself in at the Ebonyi State Police Headquarters on Friday, May 22nd, 2020.
Nyerere was first arrested last Thursday alongside nine other persons for allegedly torturing and brutalising one Pastor Okochi Obeni, a social media critic, for allegedly criticising the Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state, Ogbonnaya Enyim.
Flavision learnt that the incident took place on Thursday, May 14th, 2020, at one of the village squares in the community.
The group was reportedly supposed to give the victim 57 strokes of the cane, but ended up flogging him 36 times after allegedly forcing him to accept he committed a crime against the community by his action.
According to sources, apart from caning the cleric 36 times, the group forced him to drink from the gutters.
The Ebonyi State Police Command, on Friday, May 22nd, 2020, confirmed the development to Flavision.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Loveth Odah, said the suspect showed up because he was afraid that police were looking for him. Odah noted that Nyerere did so in his own interest, adding that was in police custody.
