Lagos Assembly Crisis: Obasa, Meranda Claim Speakership

Yesterday’s spectacular reappearance of evicted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over a “plenary session” with just four MPs present, gave the turmoil roiling the Lagos State House of Assembly a new dimension.
However, the 36 MPs who remained requested that Obasa was removed, stating that they were still loyal to Mojisola Meranda.
This occurred in spite of Obasa’s January 13 lawsuit challenging his dismissal.
The assembly and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, the home state of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have become polarized since Obasa, a sixth-term lawmaker representing Agege constituency I, was removed on January 13, 2025, for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office, and Meranda, representing Apapa I, was elected as speaker.
President Tinubu’s purported disapproval of Obasa’s dismissal has put pressure on Meranda to leave office.
Despite objections from the majority of lawmakers, Obasa returned to the 40-member parliamentary body after a frenzy of activities over the festering situation.
Early on Thursday, it was announced that Obasa’s security details had been restored, opening the door for his return, but Meranda’s had been withdrawn. However, Meranda’s security aides were reinstated before yesterday’s finale.
Shortly later, hundreds of Obasa’s fans were positioned across the House grounds, singing and dancing in celebration of their principal’s return as he stormed the gathering under strict protection.
After security personnel allegedly broke open the chamber doors to let Obasa and his supporters in, he then presided over a plenary with just four members.
Hon. Jubreel Kareem (Agege II), Hon. Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa I), Hon. Kazeem Olayinka Eso (Mushin 11), and Hon. Nuraini Akinsanya (Mushin 1) were with him.
